Summer is a great time to catch up on some reading, both personal and professional. Like many educators, I have a book list a mile long! Next up in my pile is the book Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator by Dave Burgess.
This book was chosen as the #educoach Summer Book Study book! Our chat will begin on Wednesday, July 10 at 9:00 PM CST. Follow the #educoach hashtag for more information. Author Dave Burgess plans to join us during the book study chat!
Dave’s website mentions that in the book Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator you will learn how to:
- Tap into and dramatically increase your passion as a teacher
- Develop outrageously engaging lessons that draw students in like a magnet
- Establish rapport and a sense of camaraderie in the classroom
- Transform your class into a life-changing experience for your students
I had the opportunity to meet Dave (@burgessdave) and his lovely wife Shelley (@burgess_shelley) at the ASCD conference this past March. Their passion for education is truly a gift and they inspire others to follow their own passions. I look forward to reading Dave’s book and connecting with him during the book study chat!
Nothing is more important than being passionate about your life – both personal and professional. Ask just about any educator why they went into education and they will tell you they wanted to inspire others and make the world a better place! They wanted to help students succeed in life! The one trait that helps this work become reality is PASSION. When we are passionate about our life’s calling we share this enthusiasm with others. We set ourselves and others up for achieving success. Being passionate about our work guides us to continually strive to improve ourselves and others.
Yet, along the way, many lose sight of their passions. This is not uncommon. If this has happened to you, you are not alone. Job satisfaction rates in the US are currently at 47.2 percent, much lower than 61.1 percent satisfaction rate recorded in 1987 as indicated on the The Conference Board Job Satisfaction Survey. Reigniting passion for our work is a common topic in books, blogs, etc…
There is no better time that the present to invest in your passions. I hope you join us during the #educoach chat as we discuss Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator.

Take time this summer to discover YOU! Find your passion, life purpose, and take action!Photo note: The cute pirate in the photo above is my little dog, Boji. He is a Schoodle and has found his passion as a therapy dog for K9 unit of S.T.A.R.S., Inc. (Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School) in Sioux City, Iowa. This picture was taken while he was listening to kids read at the Sioux City Public Library. The theme of the day was “Talk like a Pirate Day.” He blogs at Boji’s Blog. We have both made the committment to rejuvenate our writing passions this summer! I need to wake him from his slumber so he can work on his blog post!
